Pete Nordstrom, president of merchandising, and Erik Nordstrom, president of stores, during a news conference in New York announcing the new store.
By Eve Tahmincioglu
The Nordstrom Facebook fan page has been all aflutter on news that the department store chain is finally going to take a big bite of the Big Apple.
?It's about damn time,? wrote one New Yorker, on news Nordstrom will be opening its first Manhattan store in 2018.
It?s an usual display of retail love from hardened Manhattanites who are more inclined to start campaigns keeping retailers out of their backyards,?most recently Wal-Mart.?
But we?re talking about Nordstrom, the Seattle-based chain known for its insanely exhaustive shoe department and insanely attentive sales people.
?These people are the best operators in the affordable luxury department store business,? said Howard Davidowitz, chairman of Davidowitz & Associates, a retail consultancy and investment-banking firm headquartered in New York.
New Yorkers have been clamoring for a Nordstrom for years, said company spokeswoman Brooke White. And the decision to finally set the wheels in motion has been 15 years in the making, she said, adding, ?It was quite a complicated process to find an ideal space.?
Nordstrom has already dipped its little toe in the New York market, operating a Faconnable boutique in the city until it sold the unit in 2007. It also opened a discount shoe outlet called Rack in 2010 in Union Square, and a charitable retail operation known as Treasure & Bond in Soho last year. ?It was a way to give back and also a way to learn about serving New Yorkers,? White said.
With its new location, the retailer is now going all in, hiring at least 1,000 workers in 2018. The new store will be located on a 40,000-square-foot site on 57th Street,?between Broadway?and?Seventh Avenue, in a location that once housed the original Hard Rock Cafe.
?It makes perfect sense that Nordstrom ? one of the premier names in retailing ? would want a flagship store in?New York, the world's premier city for retailing,? said New York Mayor?Michael?Bloomberg in a statement. ?This is very exciting news for New Yorkers and the millions of tourists who come to our city to shop each year.?
But not everyone is happy.
?Everybody will start to worry and raise their game,? said Davidowitz, referring to the department stores in the city, including Saks and Bloomingdale's, which he said have become complacent in recent years because there hasn?t been a new large competitor for a long time.
?Bloomingdale?s is going to say, ?holy @!$%#, we better get our service better'," he said. "'We better raise our game because a giant has arrived in town.??
Bloomingdale's is owned by Macy's Inc. The retailer's CEO Terry Lundgren did not immediately return a request for comment.
It's bad news for other retailers in the area, Davidowitz said, but great news for consumers who have seen chains such as Bonwit Teller and B. Altman & Co. shutter and never replaced.
?I really think Nordstrom is going to go gangbusters,? he said. ?New Yorkers are very discriminating and they know what?s good. Nordstrom is on the mark in fashion, service and aesthetics. They are just very good.?
And given that shoes are one of the hottest fashion sellers these days, he said, Nordstrom ?is going to shake things up.?
Nordstrom started out as a shoe retailer, tracing its first shoe shop in downtown Seattle back to 1901. Shoe merchants nationwide came to see Nordstrom as a model of how to sell shoes the right way, with over-the-top service and few promotions.
So what will Nordstrom?s Manhattan shoe connection be like? White said it?s too early to know exact dimensions but as with all of the retailer?s shoe havens, expect tens of thousands of pairs to choose from.
There will be five shoe departments, including women?s, active wear and juniors; designer, men?s and kids, she explained. And the store is going to stay true to its few-sales mantra with only three price blowouts yearly.
At $735 for an Oscar de la Renta satin pump at Nordstrom, there will probably be a lot of bargain-hunting New Yorkers waiting in line.

MADRID (AP) ? Spaniards blasted off fireworks and jumped for joy after their soccer team won the European Championship on Sunday night, giving the country a burst of national pride and temporary relief from the crushing economic woes that have engulfed the nation.
Tens of thousands gathered in central Madrid to watch their team beat Italy 4-0 and shout out "Gol!" more times than they thought possible. Even better for Spain, the country's team became the first ever to win a Euro, then a World Cup and then another Euro.
Spain needed "this win to counteract the suffering caused by the crisis, which seems endless," a smiling Antonio Ferrillo said in downtown Madrid.
The country has the highest unemployment rate in the 17-nation eurozone, is immersed in a deepening recession and recently asked for a bailout to prop up banks that could go broke after a decade-long property boom crashed.
After the triumph, cars drove by with passengers waving the country's red and yellow flag and yelling "Espana!, Espana!" and "I am Spanish! I am Spanish!"
But the victory gave Spaniards undisputed proof their team is the best in the world, setting off wild celebrations that went past midnight in all corners of the country.
"This is the best thing in the world that could happen," Vanesa Galilea, a 32-year-old civil servant, said as she danced with friends and thousands more in Madrid's central Cibeles square. "This generation of soccer players is incredible."
She added: "Tonight everyone can forget about the crisis, but it won't disappear, unfortunately. Economically this won't change anything but at least we will be happy for a while. Half of Spain won't show up at work tomorrow, that's for sure!"
Daniel Garcia, a 23-year-old university student, said the result made him proud to be Spanish and hopeful that he may find a job amid dire prospects, with one out of every four Spaniards jobless and the unemployment rate hitting 52 percent for people like him who are under age 25.
"It will be difficult, but maybe this will help raise our spirits and get us out of this crisis," Garcia said.
Crowds hugged each other, cried and danced with glee after they watched Spain win on a huge screen erected outside the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the home of the Real Madrid club team.
"This is very important for Spain and if it brings the risk premium down tomorrow, all the better,'" Adrian Barajas, a 35-year-old bank clerk, referring to the skyrocketing risk premium level for Spanish government debt that has raised fears the nation may soon need a full-blown public finances bailout like those accepted by Greece, Portugal and Ireland.
Sunday's stunning victory "will raise morale for sure, but for three days, no more," Barajas said. "Spaniards realize this is just soccer."
Crown Prince Felipe called the win a "joy for Spain" and said he hoped Spaniards would "enjoy what they deserve."
"Italy is a very competitive team that never gives up. But when we got the third goal and the Italians had their setback with their injured player, comeback was impossible for them," he told Spain's Telecinco television network after watching the game from the VIP section in Kiev, Ukraine.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who sat near Prince Felipe during the game, said he hoped the victory would give "comfort" to Spaniards who have been enduring waves of painful austerity measures enacted by his administration. The government has raised taxes, made it cheaper for companies to fire workers and reduced funding for the country's cherished national health care and public education systems.
"We're human beings, we have our problems," Rajoy told Telecinco. "Feelings and joy, and everything that comes out of the soul, is beautiful. We have to thank the team and their coaches, they did very well."

The opposition and state media on Sunday both branded an international plan for a transition in strife-torn Syria a failure, as the death toll for a weekend of violence topped 140.
World powers meeting in Geneva on Saturday agreed that the transition plan could include current regime members, but the West did not see any role for President Bashar al-Assad in a new unity government.
Russia and China insisted that Syrians themselves must decide how the transition takes place, rather than allow others to dictate their fate.
Moscow and Beijing, which have twice blocked UN Security Council resolutions on Syria, signed up to the final agreement that did not make any explicit call for Assad to cede power.
Official Syrian media and the opposition Local Coordination Committees (LCC) group demonstrated rare agreement in slamming the outcome.
The meeting "failed," trumpeted Al-Baath, newspaper of the ruling party of the same name.
"The agreement of the task force on Syria in Geneva on Saturday resembles an enlarged meeting of the UN Security Council where the positions of participants remained the same," it said.
The LCC, which organises protests on the ground in Syria, said the outcome showed once again a failure to adopt a common position.
It called the transition accord "just one version, different in form only, of the demands of Russian leaders allied to the Assad regime and who cover it militarily and politically in the face of international pressure."
Burhan Ghalioun, a senior member and former head of the opposition Syrian National Council, told pan-Arab television Al-Arabiya that "this is the worst international statement yet to emerge from talks on Syria."
According to the SNC's official Facebook page, he described the plan as a "farce."
Ghalioun called a "mockery" the notion that Syrians should negotiate with "their executioner, who has not stopped killing, torturing... and raping women for 16 months."
SNC spokeswoman Basma Qadmani, however, told AFP in Ankara there were some "positive elements" in the deal, although "important elements remain too ambiguous... and the plan is too vague to foresee real and immediate action."
"The first one is that the final declaration says that the participants agree to say that the Assad family cannot rule the country any more, and therefore the Assad family cannot lead the transition period."
"The second positive element is the agreement that the transition should comply with the legitimate aspirations of Syrian people.
"For us this means that Assad should go because Syrian people have already said that they want Assad to go."
Iran, a strong ally of Assad, said the Geneva meeting was "unsuccessful" because Damascus and Tehran were not invited.
The United States and European nations reportedly opposed the presence of Iran, although UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and UN chief Ban Ki-moon had wanted Tehran to attend.
Opposition groups are to hold a two-day meeting in Cairo from Monday and are also expected to hold talks on Tuesday with Arab ministers in a bid to agree on a shared platform, Egyptian media and the Arab League said.
The Geneva deal came despite initial pessimism over the talks amid deep divisions between the West and China and Russia on how to end the violence that the Observatory says has killed more than 15,800 since March 2011.
Syria's neighbour Turkey, which attended the Geneva talks, scrambled fighter jets after Syrian helicopters flew close to its border, the army said on Sunday, hiking tensions following last month's downing of a Turkish plane.
Six F-16 warplanes took off from airbases in south Turkey on Saturday after Syrian helicopters flew closer to the border than is normal, the army said, specifying there had been three incidents but no violation of Turkish airspace.
In weekend violence, more than 140 people were killed across Syria, including 120 on Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. On Sunday, at least 21 people were killed, including five in the central province of Hama, according to the Britain-based watchdog.
Annan said on Saturday it was up to the Syrians to decide who they wanted in a unity government. But he added: "I would doubt that Syrians... would select people with blood on their hands to lead them."
The United States and France both said it was clear there was no future role for Assad.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague admitted the deal was a "compromise agreement" as Russia played up the fact that it had convinced other world powers that it would be "unacceptable" to exclude any party from the transition.
Moscow is loath to cast aside its ally Assad, even as relations between them have cooled.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: "How exactly the work on a transition to a new stage is conducted will be decided by the Syrians themselves.
"There are no demands to exclude from this process any one group. This aspect had been present in many of our partners' proposals. We have convinced them that this is unacceptable."

When I was a kid, I liked to trick-or-treat for UNICEF. This was the early 1970s and I didn't really know what UNICEF was. I was vaguely aware that the United Nations and kids were involved, but I didn't care. What I did care about was going door-to-door on Halloween night and thrusting my UNICEF donation box in the face of the unfortunate adult who opened the door. After the initial surprise wore off, my victim would have to put down his bowl of candy, fish a few coins out of his pocket, and send me on my way. And most of the time I would get the candy too.
I found the whole trick-or-treat for UNICEF thing intoxicating and disruptive. I could literally feel the weight of my fundraising efforts as I shlepped around the neighborhood. At the end of the night I usually had two or three boxes of pennies, nickels, dimes and even quarters sealed up and ready for my mother to drop off at the Unitarian Church where apparently the United Nations and its kids were living.
Forty years later we have the Internet, social networks and electronic money. The result of the intersection of these three powerful technologies has been Zynga and its kin. Nothing wrong with Zynga -- last year it created millions of dollars for itself and Facebook. That's a lot of boxes of pennies!
What powers the over $8 billion social gaming phenomenon is our natural competitive instincts within our social circle. We see a friend earning points from a Facebook game and we think we can do better. And so we give it a try, often buying shortcuts and powerups to keep up with other players.
Jane McGonigal has a great TED talk about putting these competitive instincts to work for more than earning money for gaming companies.
Last week I had the opportunity to learn about Crowdrise, a fundraising site with a real sense of humor and humility -- backed by some really awesome people, like Ed Norton -- that makes raising money for charity fun. Seriously fun. In ways that McGonigal would approve and Zynga would be envious of.
If you've played any social networking games, you'll immediately understand how Crowdrise works: You create a fundraising site, get your friends to participate, and earn points, badges and prizes. There is even a leaderboard.
In about 10 minutes I created my own fundraising project on Crowdrise: HuffPost CTO for Colorado Wildfires. I invite you to check it out if you want to play along. I'm going to play seriously and really try to win this game (i.e., raising $5,000 for the victims of the wildfires)
Here is what some of your competitors are doing:
The best part is you can create your own project, get your own friends involved and do more than just read about the news: You can help fix it.
