Rizzoli & Isles Boss on Season Finale: I Wanted to Leave Them at Odds (omg!)

[WARNING: The following story contains major spoilers from the Rizzoli & Isles Season 2 finale. Read at your own risk.]

What could possibly drive BFFs Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles apart?

We found out in the Rizzoli & Isles Season 2 finale after Jane (Angie Harmon) shoots Maura's estranged father/crime boss/No. 1 on the FBI's most wanted list, Paddy Doyle (John Doman), as he was trying to defend Maura (Sasha Alexander) from the culprit our titular crime-fighters were attempting to apprehend. Paddy takes a few hits before falling off a sky-high ledge. He's not dead yet, but he might as well be given Maura's uncharacteristically primal and ferocious order to Jane to back away from her dad, who had earlier told her about her biological mother and explained that he wanted to be a good father.

Check out TV's sexiest crime-fighters

If that's not enough for one person to deal with, Paddy's shooting came days after Maura's adoptive mother, Constance (Jacqueline Bisset), was severely injured in a hit-and-run accident intended to harm Maura. "I wanted the finale to be big and complicated and gothic and overwhelming for Maura," executive producer Janet Tamaro tells TVGuide.com. "This intersects her family, her job and most importantly, her friendship with Jane, which is now at risk."

Can Jane and Maura find their way back to BFF-dom again? What will happen to Paddy? Will Maura meet her biological mother? Tamaro answers our burning questions about the finale and what's in store for Season 3.

First of all, I think everyone wants to know: Does Paddy die?
Janet Tamaro: When I was doing my research about how high that catwalk was and how big a fall that was onto rock-hard concrete, let's just say it's touch and go. I love John Doman. He won't be coming back as a ghost. It wasn't a dream. I think there's more life to Paddy Doyle, but he could survive and then die. I [have decided] what I'm going to do.

How did this ending come about?
Tamaro
: I decided midway through the season. It's not mandated by the network that you have to do a cliff-hanger, but as a writer, I like coming up with a good cliff-hanger. As a viewer, I hate it! [Laughs] I hate that final frame where you go, "What?! You're kidding me!" I knew I wanted to leave them at odds with each other and I knew I didn't want to do a repeat of Season 1 where there's some sort of deadly shooting cliff-hanger involving one of them. I wanted to leave the two women with some massively unresolved conflict and a conflict where you can see both sides.

We've seen Maura and Jane have little tiffs, but never at odds like this.
Tamaro: Right. That's when I think both actresses are best. Their chemistry is wonderful with the comedic moments and they both have a different level of intensity, but they're both really interesting when they're in conflict because of what they do and how they process their work. Hopefully, those last few seconds, where we're going off of Jane's face, where she's feeling something so palpable and so upsetting, it shows what I'm intending: In those horrific moments in life, you don't act in predictable ways.

Check out the best shows of 2011

How will this affect their relationship? Jane was doing her job, but will Maura see it that way? Can she forgive her?
Tamaro
: That's something we're going to explore as they find their way back. There won't be a whole lot of time passed. It's a big rift. No matter how Maura tries to look at it, all she can see is Jane pulling the trigger and her father falling. ... I'll kind of bust myself and say I wrote myself into a corner with that scene. Maura processes things in a logical manner and that was just pure emotion that I think we can all relate to. I don't know that we've seen that kind of fierce, raw emotion from Maura before.

Are they going to be on speaking terms? They do have to work together.
Tamaro
: We will play with that for a while. The fun is seeing them together, obviously. As a writer, I can't just wrap that up quickly because it's a big moment in their lives and it's not something that's going to go away. They have to work together, but it won't be easy. I don't think their friendship is beyond repair, but it will take a bit to get back there, if they can. They're almost starting over in a way. A lot of people are curious about how they met and we may get into that.

We just see how stunned and taken aback Jane is. Will she stand her ground and use "doing my job" as her defense or will she feel guilty?
Tamaro
: We're going to do something that's not expected. I think we all think we know what Jane Rizzoli will do, but it's more interesting if she doesn't. She even surprises herself with her response. I think she feels more shock and upset than guilt at what's implicit: the loss of that close friendship. Maura is almost filled with intense hatred when she looks at her. I have a 14-year-old, so I know exactly what that feels like! [Laughs] It's really awful! In the moment, her inability to process what's happening is alarming her.

Maura goes through a whole range of emotions when it comes to Paddy, from anger and bitterness to care and concern. Do you think her reaction surprised her?
Tamaro
: Who could not feel some tenderness when he pulled out his wallet and showed her the photographs he took with long-lens cameras through her life? When he said, "I wanted to be the guy who could be this little girl's father, but all I could be was a thug," your heart breaks for him. Maura's did too. We're all a combination of good and bad, and no matter how logical it might seem to Maura to not feel anything for him, clearly in the moment he gets shot, she's feeling all kinds of uncomfortable things. I think she was a little surprised, but whether or not she's admitted it, there was genuine concern. Now she has to reconcile those feelings.

What were the top moments of the year?

It was a very Maura-heavy episode ? both of her parents' lives were hanging in the balance ? and she and Constance have grown closer this season. Will this be a springboard for more family-centric story lines for her?
Tamaro
: Yes, there are a jumble of family stories we're going to pursue. One of the things I like writing about is the family dynamic. Maura's family is very different from Jane's and we're going to find out a whole lot more about Maura's. I wanted this to propel her to learn more about them. Now [that we're going into Season 3] you can really get into background, and Maura's is so mysterious. She's going to learn a lot about herself.

That must mean she'll look up her biological mother.
Tamaro
: Yes, I'm certainly curious about her. Aren't you? I think it's too tantalizing not to introduce her. And let's just say if dad dies, dad is the only one who knew who her mother was.

Paddy mumbled "Hope" after he was shot. I take it that's her name?
Tamaro
: Yes! He did say "Hope." I'm getting pulled in a lot of different directions in my head [about how to write her]. That's a pretty interesting character. Whoever was involved with Paddy Doyle and had a baby at 18 and is as intellectually gifted as Maura ? who is she? I have a pretty strong idea of who she is and where she's been. I'm looking forward to writing that episode and to be able to delve into all that.

How will Constance figure in this? Will she and Hope meet?
Tamaro
: That's assuming they haven't met before! They may or may not have met before depending on what kind of adoption it was. It will be complicated for Constance too, as I think it is for any adoptive parent when their child connects with their biological parents. On top of that, she was just in this huge accident, in which she risked her life to save Maura, so that makes it even more difficult.

We can't forget about Agent Dean (Billy Burke). I assume he'll be back given the part he's played in this.
Tamaro
: We've got a whole Dean betrayal story to play out. Jane confided in him as a boyfriend about Paddy being back and he said he wasn't going to do anything until she said it was OK, but he does. It's a gray area. The season opener will have massive repercussions from what happened in that warehouse for all of them, and not just emotional.

Season 3 of Rizzoli & Isles will premiere next summer on TNT.

(AP) ? The FBI has joined the search for a missing 9-year-old Indiana girl and agents are scouring a mobile home park that's also a haven for registered sex offenders.

Agents on Monday descended on the mobile home park where Aliahna Lemmon lived in Fort Wayne.

A sheriff's department spokesman says Fort Wayne authorities plan to meet Monday afternoon to plan their next move after two straight days without a search for the girl. Aliahna went missing from a family friend's home on Friday.

About a half-dozen people in black windbreakers were at the mobile home park Monday. Several identified themselves as FBI agents.

Search dogs were seen at a nearby storage facility.

A state website says 15 registered sex offenders reside at the mobile home park.

Afghan men: crucial advocates for women's rights (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? Being a feminist in Afghanistan isn't always easy, even for a man. Kabul university student Ferdous Samim has had trouble persuading even his own mother that the work he does pushing for women's rights is worthwhile.

"Part of the problem in Afghanistan is that most women think like men," said Samim over tea in the garden of a Kabul cafe.

"I don't have a sister, but I'm sure if I did, and she tried to go outside the house, my mother would be asking where she was going, what she was doing, why she was going out."

A member of the male advocacy wing of activist group YoungWomen4Change, he is part of a small but critical group of male activists helping Afghan women fight for a better life.

His modest goal for the next two decades -- that women should be able to walk in Afghanistan's streets and markets without harassment -- is a reminder of the scale of the challenge women still face.

Forced marriage is still rife, rape victims have been jailed for "forced adultery," and a woman is more likely to die in childbirth in Afghanistan than anywhere else on earth.

And many of the men with power to change how women are treated -- from mullahs to tribal elders -- are not willing to listen to female activists.

Men have played an important role in feminist movements around the world, but the segregation of much of Afghan society makes their role particularly important.

Ahmad Nader Nadery, Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) commissioner, said opening doors for female campaigners is one of the most important things he does.

"Once we open the door to the mullahs, we engage them in discussion, we break the ice," he says. "Then our female trainers come and they also speak. But we start first."

CLOSED FAMILIES, HIDDEN PAIN

Afghanistan is still recovering from the strict social conservatism of the Taliban, whose hardline laws during their 1996-2001 rule marginalized women, stripping them of the right to work, study or move freely.

Many independent agencies say women are still subject to widespread discrimination and oppression.

Nadery says powerful men often fail to take into account the impact of their decisions on women's lives.

This is particularly a problem in cases related to forced or abusive marriages, or when women are given in marriage to settle disputes -- a practice known as "baad."

"Families are very closed," Nadery said. "Once a woman enters another family, her story will never get out. Most of those elders, those decision makers, don't know the suffering she goes through."

The AIHRC works with elders, runs workshops, and produces documentaries and dramas to illustrate how damaging baad and other abusive traditions can be. The men they target are often shocked by what they learn, Nadery says.

Nonetheless, changing minds remains an uphill battle. "It is a long process of work with them," says Nadery, who credits his feminism to coming from a family of strong women.

Legislation does exist to protect women but activists say it is often disregarded by courts, and in some areas officials are intimidated or bribed into ignoring women's pleas for help.

Across town from the AIHRC, in a small, busy office filled with teetering piles of paper, veteran civil rights campaigner Lal Gul is another male feminist, working for change through his Afghanistan Human Rights Organization.

He helped build up the number of female lawyers available to defend gender-specific cases; about a quarter of the 1,200 defense lawyers on the independent bar register are now women.

"Through our defense lawyers, we are registering the cases of women, providing legal aid to them, and protecting their rights, especially in human rights abuse cases like rape cases, forced marriage, divorce, domestic violence," Gul says.

The bearded, avuncular Gul became involved in civil rights after an experience more common for women than men -- forced marriage. He was engaged at the age of seven and married, while he was away, a decade later.

FAMILY PRESSURE

Activists admit that despite their work, change will be hard. Conservative values can be so strict that women who fail to conform are persecuted by their own families.

And campaigners struggle against a widely held assumption that those agitating for women's rights are pushing an anti-Islamic, or anti-Afghan, agenda.

Samim says fighting for women's rights is not only compatible with his religion and nationality, but part of it.

"I believe in order for me to be a good Afghan or a good Muslim, I must be a good human and respect everyone's rights," he says.

Working in activists' favor is a widespread hunger for a better life. In rural Herat, a bearded, turbaned elder says he is mobilizing nearby villages to encourage women's education in a bid to cut the western region's abysmal maternal death rate.

In Kabul, the capital's young professionals say they need women's input to rebuild the Afghan economy after three decades of war.

"We can't develop Afghanistan without the participation of women," says Farhad Ahmad of law firm Alexander, Safi & Associates International.

"We should be encouraging women in politics, in social life, in economic life, in every aspect of life."

Android vs iPad Which One Is The Better Device.

A lot of people want to but a IPad when the Ipad comes , after a few days , a system called android bring his tablet pc , then the people have more choice to buy the new thing, you can get a cheap android tablet pc.

If you are interested in owning a Tablet PC you might be wondering which one is the best one ? the Android Tablet PC or the iPad. Although the iPad has a lot of fans that absolutely love the product, there are also all those Anti-Apple people as well (including me!) that simply want something different. Out ranking the iPad is a hard thing to do, but it can be done and with the latest release of the Samsung Galaxy some say that Samsung has already put one over on Apple.

There are a few options which the Android Tablet PC should include ? all of which are on the Tablet. These features and options (plus additional ones) will have to be included on the Android Tablet in order to ever have a praying chance to beat the iPad. Personally, if the iPad works as well (or not as well) as the newest 4g and 3g iPhones I think the competition of Apple will be easy to beat.

One of the biggest complaints that users have when trying out the iPad is that it simply is too constrictive and closed. The Android tablets on the other hand allow you to have more freedom to do what you want. Also, the Android tablet PC includes Android FROYO which is a lightning fast addition to the Android that the Apple iPad just doesn?t have.

The FROYO allows all of the applications on the device to run quickly and efficiently. No more bogging you down with memory loss when using applications ? awesome. This is especially important in the fact that a Tablet isn?t just a PC. It?s a PC plus a music player, camera, gamer and so much more. The last thing you want to do is be bogged down by slowness ? especially when the Tablet is meant for so much!

For a lot of people, when the iPad tablet came out, they were amazed at all the features and more importantly the App Marketplace. They thought that no one else could offer something like this for a price like this. Boy, were they wrong. The Android Tablet PC has just as many, if not more FREE apps than the iPad. Plus, I just love the design.

Its so simple and sleep yet extraordinarily advanced and innovative. What?s not to love about the Android Tablet?!? Even if the tablet doesn?t include something you want ? there is probably an app you can use to get that item. That?s what I did with mine!

AUTOMOTIVE - DRIVEN: Morgan 3 Wheeler Is Reborn

When the first news reached me in February of a return of the legendary Morgan 3 Wheeler, we were not quite sure how serious to take it. That changed rapidly, and barely six months later I took off in one of the pre-production prototypes from Morgan?s factory in Malvern Link, England.

To understand this rapid development, we have to go back to 2008 when American Pete Larsen launched the Liberty Ace, a car clearly inspired by the great Morgan Aero three-wheelers or trikes of the 1930s. He designed and built the Harley Davidson-powered machine himself, using funding from several clients as well as his thriving side-car business.

The Morgan is powered by a V-twin motorcycle engine, as were the 1930s originals, only now it's a modern S&S with fuel injection. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) One of the people very interested in Larsen?s project was Charles Morgan, the manager director of the 100-year-old British automaker. Morgan travelled to Seattle, Wash., to get a closer look, and he was so impressed with what he saw that he decided to buy Larsen out and bring the project back to the Morgan factory where the first of the original three-wheeled Morgans had been produced.

A lot of work was still needed to get the design up to production-car standards, but Larsen had provided Morgan with a flying start, allowing for a relatively short development period.

The big V-twin mounted between the front wheels rumbles with power, although one of the biggest changes compared with the original design is that it?s no longer a Harley Davidson but a narrow-angle S&S X-Wedge twin. Equipped with fuel injection, dry-sump lubrication and displacing just under two liters, it produces around 120 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque.

Bolted directly to the motorcycle lump is a five-speed gearbox straight out of a Mazda Miata MX-5. The sizeable single rear wheel is driven by a belt.

The prototype model was adorned with World War II fighter-style shark graphics. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) The mechanicals are bolted to a simple tubular steel frame that in most respects follows Larsen?s interpretations of the original Morgan design. Suspension is by double wishbones and coil springs at the front, while the rear wheel is fitted between a motorcycle swing arm, which is equipped with twin spring and damper units.

The straightforward package is clothed with an aluminum body complete with the bullet-shaped nose inspired by the 1930s Morgans. Like many of the show cars, the protoype 3 Wheeler was decorated with funky ?shark? graphics that would not have looked out of place on a World War II fighter plane.

In addition to the starter button, the dashboard is fitted with only the bare necessities: a speedometer, tachometer and a row of four toggle switches.

At 6-foot-2, I was a tight squeeze getting into the Morgan, even with the help of a removable steering wheel, but there was just enough room. Thanks to the abundance of torque and power in the 1,100-pound machine, pulling away is easy and spinning the rear tire in first or second takes very little encouragement.

New candidate vaccine neutralizes all tested strains of malaria parasite

Tuesday, December 20, 2011

A new candidate malaria vaccine with the potential to neutralise all strains of the most deadly species of malaria parasite has been developed by a team led by scientists at the University of Oxford. The results of this new vaccine independently confirm the utility of a key discovery reported last month from scientists at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute who had identified this target within the parasite as a potential 'Achilles' heel' that could hold significant promise for vaccine development.

According to the World Malaria Report 2010, malaria killed an estimated 781,000 people in 2009, mainly young children and pregnant women. It is caused by parasites that are injected into the bloodstream by infected mosquitoes. The most deadly form, Plasmodium falciparum, is responsible for nine out of ten deaths from malaria. Vaccinating against malaria is likely to be the most cost-effective way of protecting populations against disease; however, no licensed vaccine is currently available. Another vaccine is achieving promising but incomplete levels of protection in clinical trials in Africa; scientists believe a new and more effective vaccine will be required to eradicate the disease.

In early November, research published in the journal Nature* showed that the P. falciparum parasite relies on a single receptor, known as 'basigin', on the surface of red blood cells to invade the cell. The parasite attaches a protein ? the antigen RH5 ? to the receptor, in a sense 'unlocking' the doorway for the parasite to enter the red blood cell. Once there, it grows and replicates, causing potentially life-threatening disease.

Today, in a paper published in the journal Nature Communications, a team of scientists from the Jenner Institute at the University of Oxford led by Dr Simon Draper, working with colleagues from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the Kenyan Medical Research Institute-Wellcome Trust Programme in Kilifi, Kenya, demonstrate that a vaccine they have developed induces an antibody response in animal models capable of neutralising all the tested strains of the P. falciparum parasite.

"Our initial finding, reported last month, was unexpected and completely changed the way in which we view how the malaria parasite invades red blood cells," says Dr Gavin Wright from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, a co-author on both studies. "It revealed what we think is the parasite's Achilles' heel in the way it invades our cells and provided a target for potential new vaccines."

Dr Sandy Douglas, a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Training Fellow from the University of Oxford and first author on the new study, adds: "We have created a vaccine that confirms the recent discovery relating to the biology of RH5, given it can generate an immune response in animal models capable of neutralising many ? and potentially all ? strains of the P. falciparum parasite, the deadliest species of malaria parasite. This is an important step towards developing a much-needed vaccine against one of the world's major killers."

The antigens of the malaria parasite are often genetically very diverse as they are forced to evolve to stay one step ahead of the immune system and avoid recognition by antibodies. However, the RH5 antigen appears to have little genetic diversity. The researchers believe that this is because even people who have been naturally and repeatedly exposed to malaria have low or undetectable levels of antibodies that target this particular antigen; these very low levels of antibody would be insufficient to kill the parasites, and hence would not exert a selective pressure for the antigen to evolve variability.

Professor Adrian Hill, a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator at the University of Oxford, says: "Vaccines against malaria are notoriously difficult to develop because the parasites' antigens ? the target of vaccines ? tend to be genetically so diverse. The RH5 antigen doesn't show this diversity, making it a particularly good target for a vaccine to exploit. Our next step will be to begin safety tests of this vaccine. If these prove successful, we could see clinical trials in patients beginning within the next two to three years."

Warriors' Ellis sued for alleged sexual harassment (AP)

OAKLAND, Calif. ? A former Golden State Warriors employee filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against star guard Monta Ellis on Wednesday, alleging Ellis sent her unwanted texts that included a photo of his genitals.

In her lawsuit, which also names the team, Erika Ross Smith alleges Ellis began sending her several dozen explicit messages, sometimes several times a day, starting in November 2010 through January while she worked for the team's community relations department.

The messages included lines such as, "I want to be with you," and "Hey Sexy," and periodically asked her what she was wearing or doing, according to the lawsuit.

Smith would often reply with "What do you want?" or "I am sleeping," the lawsuit claims.

"On a micro level, my client has endured unwanted harassment, has suffered and continues to suffer emotional distress and trauma," her attorney, Burt Boltuch, said at a news conference in his Oakland office. "On a macro level, this type of conduct, especially in the sports world, must stop.

"She was embarrassed. She was intimidated. She felt scared and helpless."

The Warriors deny the allegations, saying Ellis and Smith had a "consensual relationship."

At a charity event in nearby Alameda, Ellis would only say that the team has responded.

"It's a legal matter, we'll let it play its course," Ellis told KTVU-TV. "Y'know, what happens, happens."

Boltuch said his client rejected Ellis' advances and feared that no one would believe her.

"I was treated unfairly. I was let go," Smith said at the news conference. "It wasn't my fault that I was let go."

Boltuch also showed a photo of what he said was Ellis' genitalia that the guard allegedly sent to Smith's work-issued cellphone on Dec. 17, 2010, a day after he complained to the team about her job performance.

When questioned if the photo came from Ellis, Boltuch responded, "We know it came from him."

Rick Welts, the Warriors' president and chief operating officer, said in a prepared statement Wednesday that the organization takes all harassment allegations seriously.

"When we were made aware of a consensual relationship between Mr. Ellis and the Plaintiff, we did what an organization should do. We told both to stop ? promptly, directly and fairly," Welts said. "The Warriors have never taken any action against the Plaintiff for any inappropriate reason, and we deny the allegations she is making."

Boltuch rejected the team's claim.

"It was absolutely, unequivocally 100 percent not consensual," Boltuch said. "And if it was, why was my client's job duties removed and nothing was done to Mr. Ellis? To me that smacks of sexual harassment."

Ellis' agent, Jeffrey Fried, said Wednesday that he was en route to Oakland and didn't immediately have a comment.

According to the lawsuit, the Warriors changed Smith's job description and eventually fired her after Ellis' wife, Juanika Ellis, learned of the texts and complained to team executives in January.

Smith said she told team executives that Monta Ellis told her he was using a "secret cellular phone" that was being kept by the team's equipment manager and was in the name of a third party.

Smith, who has worked in similar jobs with the Washington Wizards and the Phoenix Suns, said Wednesday that it was tough to go public.

"It was pretty hard because I knew that essentially my career is over and it would be hard to re-establish myself after working so hard throughout the years," said Smith, who believes she may be blacklisted in NBA circles.

According to the lawsuit, Smith said she told team officials that Ellis' wife called her on Jan. 7 and said, "I know about the secret phone."

Shortly after that, Smith said Ellis told her that he met with team officials and general manager Larry Riley told him "not to worry," and that "everything would be swept under the rug."

The following month, Juanika Ellis apparently used her purse to push Smith into a wall during a Warriors home game, the lawsuit said. Smith said she believes that Ellis' wife believes Smith initiated the texts with the player.

"She was accusatory towards me," Smith said Wednesday.

Boltuch said the team in February reduced Smith's responsibilities, including interaction with Ellis and other players after she refused to resign.

"They offered her what I believe is a bribe," Boltuch said. "They said, `It'd be best if you resign and we'll give you some money.' She rejected it."

Boltuch said the team eliminated Smith's position in August, more than a week after she notified the team that a reporter contacted her inquiring if Ellis was "stalking" her.

The lawsuit alleges retaliation, wrongful termination and intentional infliction of emotional distress and seeks unspecified damages.

Ellis was the Warrior's leading scorer last season, averaging 24.1 points per game. His acrobatic layups and ball handling skills have made him a fan favorite though he is known to be reticent and has few endorsement deals and less notoriety than other players of his stature.

Ellis signed a $66 million, six-year deal with the Warriors in 2008 not long after winning the NBA's Most Improved Player award.

He then sustained a serious ankle injury that summer on his motorized scooter and missed most of the season, earning a 30-game suspension without pay because he wasn't supposed to be riding such a vehicle.

Ellis was recently selected as a team captain for this season.

Oil rig with 67 aboard overturns in Russia's Far East

By msnbc.com staff

Updated at 1 a.m. ET

At least two people were killed and another 14 were rescued after a drilling rig with 67 people aboard overturned and sank?Sunday in the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East, news agency Ria Novosti reported, citing?a local emergency service.

"As of 4 p.m. local time, 14 people were lifted from the rig; their condition is satisfactory. Also the bodies of two people without any signs of life were found. They will be lifted aboard the Magadan ice breaker," Taimuraz Kasayev, a spokesman for the regional emergencies service, said, according to Ria Novosti.

A distress signal was sent while the platform was being towed by an icebreaker through high seas and strong winds afer finishing its drill mission, Russia Today news channel?said.

The platform was?about 125 miles off Sakhalin Island.

All workers at the rig have warm swimming suits and life vests, the rescue service told Russia Today. There were also four inflatable rafts on the facility.

The Kolskoe rig was built in 1985, Russia Today said. At 230 feet by 262 feet, it is one of the largest oil rigs in Russia. It was due to set sail for drilling off the Vietnamese coast at the end of its current mission, Russia Today said.

The rig was operated by Russian exploration company Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka, Reuters reported.

The accident poses no environmental risks, Ria Novosti reported.

"Fuel stocks at the Kolskoe drilling rig are minimal and are stored in hermetically sealed tanks, and there is no danger of a fuel spill," Taimuraz Kasayev, a spokesman for the regional emergencies service, told the agency.

British sprinter raises 2012 sponsorship on eBay (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A top British sprinter desperate to run in his home London Olympics next year has raised 32,550 pounds ($50,500) in sponsorship by auctioning himself on eBay.

James Ellington told the BBC he "couldn't be happier' after his effort to raise cash to train closed on Saturday with 71 bids from 45 bidders over a 10-day period.

"I didn't think that many people would bid," added the 100 and 200 meter runner who competed in this year's world championships in Daegu.

Ellington, 26, lost out on funding after enduring four years of injury problems, making him the country's top sprinter without a sponsor ahead of his home Games.

He had set a reserve of 30,000 pounds, which he said would provide him with enough to train and pay for travel, accommodation, kit and nutritional support.

In return for the cash, he had promised to wear the sponsor's branded kit "at every possible opportunity where appropriate, including at training and press events, until after the 2012 Games."

Judge: MCSO must pay Republic's legal fees

Dec. 16, 2011 08:01 PM
The Arizona Republic

A judge this month ordered the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to pay The Arizona Republic and KPNX 12 News nearly $51,000 for its legal fees in obtaining public records.

The Sheriff's Office says it will appeal.

The newspaper and TV station in April filed public-records requests to obtain an investigative report from Arpaio's office.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office conducted a six-month investigation into allegations of mismanagement and retaliation against employees within the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The allegations were contained in an internal memo authored by a whistleblower inside the department.

That investigation also found that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office failed to adequately investigate more than 400 sex-crime cases, including dozens in El Mirage, over a two-year period because of poor oversight and because former Chief Deputy David Hendershott hoped to protect a key investigator from bad publicity.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office initially refused to release any records from the report and declined to specify when records could be disclosed. Sheriff Joe Arpaio's refusal prompted a lawsuit by the newspaper and TV station.

After the lawsuit was filed -- and after Hendershott and Deputy Chief Larry Black resigned in the wake of the investigation's findings -- the Sheriff's Office began to release parts of the report.

However, portions of the report relating to the conduct of Capt. Joel Fox were not released, with the office citing confidentiality statutes designed to keep certain information under seal while employees remained under investigatation, as Fox was at the time. Fox was fired and he filed an administrative appeal, but the office continued to withhold records relating to his conduct.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Judge Buttrick ruled in favor of the media partners, ordering the Sheriff's Office to release records relating to Fox after he filed an $8 million notice of claim against the state and Maricopa County.

On Dec. 1, Buttrick ruled that the Sheriff's Office must pay $50,565 to the media partners.

"The court's award recognizes the public's right to prompt access to public records, especially a report involving allegations of high-level corruption inside the Sheriff's Office," said David Bodney, an attorney who represented The Republic and 12 News.

Tom Liddy, an attorney for Arpaio, said The Republic and 12 News are not entitled to attorney fees because the records were released to the public as soon as the law permitted.

"The sheriff clearly recognizes and applauds the public's right to know," Liddy said.

ICC prosecutor: Gadhafi death may be war crime (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? The chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court said Thursday there are "serious suspicions" that the death of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was a war crime.

Luis Moreno Ocampo told reporters after briefing the U.N. Security Council that he sent a letter to the head of the National Transitional Council asking what the government's plans are to investigate alleged war crimes by all parties, including the rebels.

The uprising against Gadhafi's 42-year rule erupted in February, quickly escalated into civil war, and ended in October with Gadhafi's capture and death in unclear circumstances. Witness accounts and video taken of the deposed dictator after his capture by rebel fighters show that he was beaten and abused by his captors, and there were strong indications he was killed in custody.

"The death of Moammar Gadhafi is one of the issues to be clarified ? what happened ? because there are serious suspicions that it was a war crime," Moreno Ocampo said.

He said what the ICC does on Gadhafi's death and other war crimes will depend on what Libya's interim government does because under the Rome statute that established the war crimes tribunal, the ICC only steps in if national authorities are unwilling or unable to act.

Moreno Ocampo said his office is working closely with Libyan authorities not only on Gadhafi's case but on those of his son, Seif al-Islam, and former intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senoussi, who were captured and face ICC charges of crimes against captured for their roles in the uprising.

Libya's new leaders have said they will try Seif al-Islam at home even though they have yet to set up a strong court system. The ICC wants to be certain the government will be capable of putting on a fair trial for Seif al-Islam and al-Senoussi.

Moreno Ocampo said in an AP interview that the judges at the ICC have asked the National Transitional Council to inform them of their plans before Jan. 10. He said if the government challenges the ICC's jurisdiction, it will be up to the judges to decide where the two accused will be tried.

In the meantime, he said, his office is continuing its investigation.

"We are sure there were massive rapes, quite sure," Moreno Ocampo said. "We're trying to define who ordered them."

The Security Council referred incidents stemming from the Libyan uprising to the ICC and Moreno Ocampo said he promised the council that he would present his strategy for the continuing investigation of possible war crimes in his next report in May.

After Seif al-Islam's arrest, Moreno Ocampo flew to the Libyan capital late last month and met with government officials.

He said in an AP interview that the officials offered him the opportunity to meet Seif al-Islam. But he said he declined because Gadhafi's son would have needed to have a lawyer present and he had not asked to see the prosecutor.

Moreno Ocampo said the Libyan authorities told him it was "very important" to prosecute Seif al-Islam themselves for two reasons ? he is "the face of the old regime" and "they would like to show they can do better than with Moammar" and conduct a proper trial.

"If they can convince the (ICC) judges," Moreno Ocampo said, "we don't need to go and fight for a case."

(AP) ? Mitt Romney is defending his time as a business executive, saying that he ultimately added tens of thousands of jobs despite cuts at some companies.

Romney on Thursday night acknowledged that he cut jobs at some of the businesses his venture capital firm took over. He says that some of his investments didn't pay off and that not all businesses succeed.

His chief rival, Newt Gingrich, has accused Romney of shredding companies and costing Americans jobs. Romney says that he worked to help businesses strengthen themselves and survive.

Romney also says that he welcomes the criticism and predicts that President Barack Obama will use it against him if Romney wins the Republican nomination.

Romney made the remarks during the latest GOP debate.

Bombs kill three, injure 35 in north Iraq: police (Reuters)

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) ? Two car bombs exploded near shops and restaurants in the Iraqi town of Tal Afar on Wednesday, killing at least three people and wounding 35 others, a police source said.

The blasts occurred in the mainly Shi'ite town of Tal Afar, which lies about 420 km (260 miles) north of Baghdad and just west of the volatile northern city of Mosul - the last urban stronghold of al Qaeda Sunni insurgency.

Militants blew up a small oil tanker then few minutes later they detonated a car bomb as more people gathered to help the wounded, the source in Tal Afar police said. Seven of those wounded were seriously injured, the source said.

Violence has subsided sharply in Iraq since the sectarian strife in 2006-07, but Sunni Islamist insurgents and Shi'ite militia still stage daily bombings and assassinations.

Nearly nine years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein, Washington will end its military presence and pull out its remaining 5,500 troops before December 31.

Obama sets campaign theme: Middle class at stake (AP)

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. ? Declaring the American middle class in jeopardy, President Barack Obama on Tuesday outlined a populist economic vision that will drive his re-election bid, insisting the United States must reclaim its standing as a country in which everyone can prosper if provided "a fair shot and a fair share."

While never making an overt plea for a second term, Obama's offered his most comprehensive lines of attack against the candidates seeking to take his job, only a month before Republican voters begin choosing a presidential nominee. He also sought to inject some of the long-overshadowed hope that energized his 2008 campaign, saying: "I believe America is on its way up."

In small-town Osawatomie, in a high school gym where patriotic bunting lined the bleachers, Obama presented himself as the one fighting for shared sacrifice and success against those who would gut government and let people fend for themselves. He did so knowing the nation is riven over the question of whether economic opportunity for all is evaporating.

"Throughout the country, it's sparked protests and political movements, from the tea party to the people who've been occupying the streets of New York and other cities," Obama said.

"This is the defining issue of our time," he said in echoing President Theodore Roosevelt's famous speech here in 1910.

"This is a make-or-break moment for the middle class and all those who are fighting to get into the middle class," Obama said. "At stake is whether this will be a country where working people can earn enough to raise a family, build a modest savings, own a home and secure their retirement."

For Obama, saddled with a weak national economic recovery, the speech was a chance to break away from Washington's incremental battles and his own small-scale executive actions. He offered a sweeping indictment of economic inequality and unleashed his own brand of prairie populism.

He spoke for nearly an hour to a supportive audience, reselling his ideas under the framework of "building a nation where we're all better off."

Billed as an important address that would put today's economic debates in context, Obama's speech seemed a bit like two packaged into one.

The first was that of the campaigner, full of loft and reclamation of American values. The second was the governing Obama, who recited his familiar jobs agenda, his feud with Congress over extending a Social Security tax cut, even his fight to get his consumer watchdog confirmed.

Obama tied himself to Roosevelt, the president and reformer who came to this town in eastern Kansas and called for a "square deal" for regular Americans. Roosevelt said then the fight for progress was a conflict "between the men who possess more than they have earned and the men who have earned more than they possess."

It is a theme Obama is embracing in a mounting fight for re-election against Republicans who, regardless of the nominee, will attack his stewardship of the economy.

One of the leading contenders for the GOP nomination, Mitt Romney, ridiculed Obama for comparing himself to Roosevelt.

Obama "said that he is like Teddy Roosevelt," Romney said at a campaign event in Paradise Valley, Ariz. "And I thought, `In what way is he like Teddy Roosevelt?' Teddy Roosevelt of course founded the Bull Moose Party. One of those words applies."

Kirsten Kukowski, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, said, "Maybe instead of trying to be like other presidents, Obama should try being president."

Obama took aim at the Republicans, saying they would only return the same structures that led to America's economic downturn. "Their philosophy is simple: We are better off when everyone is left to fend for themselves and play by their own rules," Obama said. "I'm here to say they are wrong."

The president conceded that the country is in the midst of a consuming re-examination on his watch, prompting national movements against both government spending and an economy that many feel disproportionately favors the elite. Obama went on the offensive about income equality, saying it distorts democracy and derails the American dream.

Responding to those who want to cut taxes and regulation in the belief success will trickle down, Obama said: "Here's the problem: It doesn't work. It's never worked."

Obama noted that Theodore Roosevelt was called a "radical, a socialist, even a communist" for putting forth ideas in his last campaign such as an eight-hour work day, a minimum wage for women, unemployment insurance and a progressive income tax.

Left unsaid: Roosevelt's Bull Moose campaign in 1912 failed to return him to the White House.

Obama attempted to sum up the pain and peril for a society where the middle class is struggling. But he also called for individual responsibility.

"In the end," he said, "rebuilding this economy based on fair play, a fair shot and a fair share will require all of us to see the stake we have in each other's success."

Obama also challenged the big banks that took bailouts from American taxpayers, pointing to "a deficit of trust between Main Street and Wall Street." He said banks that were bailed out had an obligation to work to close that trust deficit and should be doing more to help remedy past mortgage abuses and assist middle-class taxpayers.
