Kwanzaa parade set to begin

Preparations were underway Monday morning for a parade celebrating the kickoff of the Kwanzaa celebration in Los Angeles.

Kwanzaa, first observed in 1966, is a weeklong celebration of African American heritage and culture. The parade is scheduled to begin at Jefferson and Crenshaw boulevards at noon and then march to Leimert Park.

Festival organizers said it will include a "mobile dramatization" of mythical and historical figures, including abolitionist Harriet Tubman and the mythical black Amazon queen Califia, whose kingdom, the island of California, is believed to have given the state its name.

The parade is also expected to include a vintage fire truck and entries from various civic organizations, churches and car and motorcycle clubs.

The festival's king and queen are?activist and author Linda Jay and independent filmmaker Walter Powell.
